What do you use to bring in your books?

In our exam room (IL - Champaign) those with big rolling suitcases had to remove their stuff at their designated testing table and then take the suitcases outside. I had a mesh backpack and a cardboard moving box with my stuff in it. I was able to keep the box by my desk. By far the weirdest...

Studying for the October 2015 exam

I would glance over the math sections just to familiarize yourself with some of the concepts you may have forgotten. For example, the Law of Cosines that can help you navigate through linkage problems. As far as the alternative power sections, I would look over them, so you know where certain...

MERM 12 vs 13 - MD PM exam

You can currently sell your 12th edition to amazon for a $97 gift card which would bring the cost of the new edition down to about $160 (new).

Club of people who failed April 2015

Only 100 hours of studying? I realize everyone is different, but that doesn't sound like enough (especially over 3 months). Most I spoke with were in the 300-400 hour range.

    All the Best mates.

I remember struggling with a really simple question on the exam in October, reworked it about 5 times and wasn't getting close. Finally just guessed. Got home and realized within 5 minutes of reflection that it was asking for psi and I had not converted from psf. Felt pretty stupid then, but...

Illinois Result Release Date for April 2015 Exam

I can't wait to see the level of freak out on 6/11/15.

Good Luck to all taking the test this Friday!

I remember the feelings when I was this close last October. I was frankly just sick of studying. I'd resigned myself to the notion that if I didn't pass, I was just that much ahead for studying for the April exam. I didn't feel very confident. I did decent on the NCEES practice exam but the...

What's the scoop on PE exam locations?

Champaign, IL - iHotel Rooms were a bit small. The had about 12-15 of us in a small room and probably about 30 in a larger room. Each person got their own table, which was about 4 feet wide by 3 feet deep (plenty of workspace). Rooms were quiet. Chairs were the stackable variety with padded...

Speeding up time to solve problems

As far as simulating exact exam conditions for practice, I'm not a big proponent of it. I know some swear by it, and by all means, do what works best for you, I'm just saying that you do not need to do it in order to pass. I tried it with the PPI, after 30 minutes I gave up. It almost killed...

Speeding up time to solve problems

I went straight through, if I got hung up or knew I didn't know it, I would move on. I then came back and did the work on the ones I had skipped. I had to guess on several at the end of each session. I passed, so either the work I did do was really good, or I am a master of randomness.

Are solutions allowed in test room?

Are the proctors generally very strict? I didn't take any chances heading into the exam last October, so everything I had was in line with NCEES guidelines, but the proctors didn't even look at our references. They would look up enough to notice when someone raised their hand to go to the...

Those 12 Questions on Engineering Principles on PE Breath-Mechanical

Not to be rude, but using the exam specs in conjunction with the MERM table of contents / index will go a long way. At 2+ weeks out, if you can't find these topics in MERM on your own, then you're going to be in for a rough day on the 17th. 1. Engineering terms and symbols 2. Economic...

Suggestion for how to carry in books?

I used a sturdy cardboard moving box with handles. That was enough to get 4 binders of class notes, MERM solutions, MERM, conversions book, Machinery's Handbook, and Mark's Handbook as well as an additional calculator and straight edges. Those that brought there stuff in suitcases were...

Are solutions allowed in test room?

The proctors at my test location in IL didn't even check materials. Basically had to sign off that you weren't using anything that you weren't supposed to. Basically IL follows the NCEES instructions that say anything is good as long as it's bound. I used the MERM practice problems w/...

With 10 days to go, what are you focusing on?

Good luck. MERM practice problems are (in my opinion) a lot harder, but they are good practice. I tried to do every problem from the relevant test sections (especially when I got to my afternoon discipline). It was worth it. There were at least 2-3 problems that were very similar to exam...

Test Time in less than 1000 hours - how are ya doing

There's definitely a fine line. I probably over-tabbed, but I had mine color-coded (with matching tabs in my review course notes) by discipline (HVAC = Blue, MD = Green, TFS = Red) so it was a little easier to navigate. Bottom line, do whatever you feel comfortable with, just don't wait until...

Test Time in less than 1000 hours - how are ya doing

Agreed. I took a review course and would spend nights re-watching the lectures and tabbing / highlighting my references. Basically ended up watching each lecture at least twice.
