Codes Actually Needed for SE Exam

I would highly recommend getting all of the proper edition of the codes. AISI and PCI not as critical as the rest, but for me it made me feel a lot better about my chances going in knowing that I had prepared to the best of my ability, which included having all the most up to date material...

PCI Design Handbook: Precast and Prestressed Concrete 7th ed.

Yep! I don't think it is absolutely critical to have the current edition, but when you balance the time it takes to print it off vs the probability that you will get a gimme lookup problem with the exact value listed on the table, it is time very well spent.

October 2014 SE Test - Results

Congratulations to all the "acceptable" getters!!! (Don't you wish they would make it sound a little more positive?)

Take one exam or both at the same time?

I agree that this is a decision that should to be made based on your experience and your lifestyle. I have no experience outside of metal building design, but I was able to absolutely devote my life outside of work to studying for the three months leading up to the test. I had just sold my...

October 2014 SE Test - How did it go?

I received an email from NCEES when the results were ready this past spring.

    Good Luck All

I do think it's important to show your work neatly, especially on the problems you are less confident with. What I did, was approach each question from the standpoint of trying to show an acceptable minimum level of competency. I work in the steel industry, so I did try to rush through the...

    Masonry design references

I used the problems in the NCEES practice exam and the PPI practice exam. If I recall correctly, the first afternoon problem in the NCEES practice exam dealt with lateral earth pressure on a CMU wall. I would certainly go over that problem.

    SE Practice Exams

Dave, I also took the PPI practice test pretty close to when I took the real exam this past spring. I don't remember my exact score on the practice exam, but I do remember being VERY discouraged by the result. On the practice exam, I completely ran out of time on the afternoon and didn't do...

    SE Exam - Example Problems

I was fortunate enough to pass both sections this past spring. I studied a lot directly from the ASCE 7, AISC, AISC SDM, ACI 318, TMS 402, NDS and NDS provisions for wind and SZ. I also found the AISC example problems and the NDS example problems very useful. I also used the SERM, a concrete...

    SE Exam - Example Problems

Here are a couple pieces of advice I would offer regarding how to choose what to study.... 1. During the first part of your test prep, allow yourself to study what you're interested in.....at least some of the time. I set out trying to stick to a very regimented study schedule and started...

    Bridge Questions in SE Exam

7-10 sounds right to me. I remember it seeming like a big part of the multiple choice. I would also add that I was able to answer a few of the more specific AASHTO questions by using the index to get me to the right section in the code. If I couldn't find the exact term I was looking for, I...

I just checked out your website. It's awesome! I especially wish I would have seen it before I took the exam, haha!

My real career is bass fishing......it just doesn't pay very well yet. Any of you other engineers in the same boat?

    NCEES Sample Questions and Solutions

I agree with this, for me I thought the multiple choice on the actual test was significantly easier than the sample questions. However, I thought that the afternoon questions were slightly more difficult and a little more in depth than the sample questions. Overall though, I thought that the...

Prep for PE Exam - A Simple Guide

The original post is spot on. I will reiterate the recommendation for school of PE. I took their course preparing for the SE exam and would highly recommend them, they were very good about covering material that was the most relevant and the instructors were very knowledgeable about the exam...

    Code understanding vs technical concepts

This is very good advice. Knowing the ASCE 7 inside and out for seismic will help you out on the PE exam and is crucial for the state specific exam. In my opinion, taking the time to do this is time better spent than going into detail on some of the lesser topics. Overall, I spent most of my...

Has Anyone Gotten their CA PE or SE through reciprocity? What is the process?

I would add also that the Surveying and Seismic exams aren't a cakewalk. I was definitely rushed during both of them.

Has anyone started studying for the October 2014 SE exam yet?

Hey guys. I'm new (at least to posting) to the site and thought I would add my 2 cents about handling the AASHTO during the exam because I think that part went pretty well for me..... 1. I skipped all the AASHTO questions and saved them all until the end. I waited until I had answered all the...
