    1" or 1 1/2" gypcrete

The code (IBC or ASCE7) will typically permit you to idealize (pretend) the diaphragm as flexible. In reality, unless your walls have very few openings, the diaphragm, even untopped is far stiffer and acts more like a rigid body. With topping, no question it will behave more rigid. The basis for...

FS: Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures

I have a brand new copy of Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures by Alan Williams, as seen here: http://www.amazon.com/Structural-Engineeri...n/dp/1427761221 The book is useful. I'd like to sell it for $40 shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states of the US. Send me a message if your...

Question for Kevo or anyone else: 2-story 2-stage analsysis per ASCE 12.2.3.1

Per ASCE 7-05 Section 12.2.3.1 item a. A two stage analysis is what is not permitted due to the 10x stiffness. A two stage analysis permits you to design upper and lower portions as seperate structures to realize the benefit of the higher R for shear walls used on the upper floor and reduce the...

    16 Hour SE Results

Did anyone do better than this and still fail? Seems like you need to get all the four essays mostly correct in order to pass plus do well (70%+) on the AM. The essays are tough with so little time and so much requested.

    SE Results?

Probably very. Along with the SE Trade Associations promoting laws requiring the SE designation, low pass rates ensure NCEES future revenue. Why would NCEES not be "happy"?

    16 Hour SE Results

I did not pass Gravity. Failure diagnostic reports 27/40 on AM and "acceptable" on 2 of the 4 PM essays. Obviously, that's not good enough. I'm curious to know what are some of the other failing diagnostic scores. I did pass Lateral.

WA Board's Criteria for SE Examination.

If this is true, you should ask the Board to explain in clear written terms why they would allow you to take half the new SE exam but prohibit you from taking the other half. How did the Board express this prohibition to you? Never heard of the situation you describe.

    16 Hour SE Results

I talked to Bruce Martin with NCEES today and he said they hoped to send results to the states this week. He was not sure if results would be posted to the NCEES website in ones user account. He did say exams have been graded. It sounds like the delay is simply is determining where to set the...

    Waiting

In Seattle WA there were probably 100 other SE exam takers this past April. I suspect that in states which have no laws requiring an SE, the number of people taking the SE approaches zero. As state laws require "SE" to do structural work, then the number of examinees increases. Which leads to...

    SE 2-day

Here's my guess. Pass rates are not predetermined but will probably be similar to past results for the NCEES SE I and II. Each day is independent i.e. you could pass one and not the other, just like you can choose to take one day but not the other. NCEES says the results will be provided after...

    SE 2-day

I can't say what I saw, but NCEES is very clear about you should expect to see. Click on the SE Exam Specification links. You'll see that AASHTO content and particular AASHTO are codes specified. You can further deduce from the NCEES Exam Specification info that AASHTO only makes up a fraction...

    SE 2-day

I felt good about the AM sessions on both the vertical and lateral. I feel like I failed to demonstate adequate knowledge on all four essay questions of the afternoon session of the vertical. I felt good about the essay portion of the lateral. I have never taken the SE I, SE II or SE III so I...

    NCEES Practice Exam 112 (lateral)

Thanks for the replies. Re: tension only bracing, I agree, if one makes that assumption then the maximum axial force in the column per NCEES is correct. But why make this assumption? Tension only bracing is not permitted for SCBF, but is for OCBF...

$240 for AASHTO PE Exam Edition

Have you checked with NCEES to see if that AASHTO book will still be the reference in April 2012? For some reason, I thought I read somewhere that after the 2011 exams they will update to new codes but I could be wrong... Anyway, I got the SERM 5th edition mostly for use as an AASHTO aid, and...

    NCEES Practice Exam 112 (lateral)

In the Nov. 2010 Structural Sample Questions and Solutions book, Lateral section problem 112 treats the column axial force in an X brace frame as the support vertical reaction force. Per statics, the axial force in the column is less than the support vertical reaction because the reaction force...

    NCEES Sample Exam

The described solution for 604b uses the wrong F_bx. Based on the supposed moment, 20k-ft, which is positive, the "tension zone is stressed in tension". In other words, a positive bending moment puts the glulam tension laminations in tension. A positive moment as assumed will not make the...

    Wooden Shear Walls

Ok, now I have my 2009 IBC. In the 2009 IBC, most wood shear wall provisions have been moved from the 2009 IBC to the 2008 AFPA SDPWS. The first time in recent history that model codes permit unblocked wood shear walls is in the 2008 AFPA SDPWS Sec. 4.3.3 but is limited to shear walls with...

    Wooden Shear Walls

I see that a lot of wrong anwers are posted here. Don't you guys and gals know the code sections about which you provide "answers"? For a long time, wood shear walls require blocking, and their values are based on having blocking, see 2006 IBC Sec. 2305.3.3. I don't have the 2009 IBC with me...
