Let the Waite Begin, How did everyone do?

I took PE Electric - Power. The morning went really well, possibly over 35/40. The afternoon was a different animal I'm guessing i probaly got somewhere in the 70% range. Had to really work at a lot of the "knowledge" questions (ones requiring no calculations, just relationships between...

    NEC

I don't think this came out of the NEC, but this worked for all my sample tests: Low Voltage <1000V Medium Voltage 1kV-100kV High Voltage 100.1 kV-230 kV Extra High Voltage >230 kV

What are people taking into the PE Power Test

I'm curious what everyone else is planning on bringing to the exam for April 2013. I just got out my milk crate today and filled it with what I plan to bring, this is what I have: 2011 NEC Handbook with tab set in them 2012 NESC Camara PPI book A 3 ring binder I created of reference notes, with...

    which version NESC

The 2012 NESC applies to this exam. I'd expect 0-1 questions on it though, but if there is one it will be very easy to answer with the NESC and a guess without it.

    exam material format

You should contact the company/organization that administers the exam in your state with this question and ask if it okay or not, and if they say it is, print the response and bring it with you. My state has been very reponsive to clarifying e-mails.

    Spin-Up v. Complex Imaginary

Does anybody else feel that the Spin-Up exams do more harm then good? It may just be that I'm using the 1st edition, but I feel that the questions are so unrealistic, poorly worded, and at times just wrong that I may be learning things wrong by using them. When I grade my exam i have at least a...

    complex imaginary exams any good?

I'm studying for the April 2013 exam and have used NCEES, spin up, and CI. NCEES is most the difficult and involves the most "testing trip up" style questions where one keyword will change how you solve the problems. I assume this is good practice for the test. CI questions are generally not as...

    NCEES #133

I also found my answer at 250.53. I looked up "single grounding electrode" in the index to find it. I noticed the PE really loves exceptions. So look for italic text (esp in the handbook)

    NCEES Power #531

saberger_vt method is more direct than mine. I found I(line)=(500<90-500<0)/(j50)=14.14<45. Then plugged this into Q=I^(2)*R=(14.14<45)^(2)*j50=10000<180.

    NCEES 2009 Power question 530

Has anyone used the MVA method to solve it? If so, what MVAs did you find for the system and the transformer? I have been doing 40/0.01=4000 MVA for the system and 1/4%=25 for the transformer and did not get the right answer. This is the first time I've had trouble using the MVA method.

    NCEES #524

I think i found my answer later in the same test for 527. 1) no load or core losses are due to hystersis and eddy currents and are sustanitally constant 2) load losses (or I(^2)R losses) are proportioanl to the load current squared.
