Just to confirm:
I've looked through a couple different examples and they all say the following:
When given a normal force and a shear force, divide each one by the same area of the sample (Pi*d^2 / 4 for a circular direct shear sample) to get the appropriate shear stress and normal stress.
Is this correct? It sure seems like I should divide the normal force by Pi*d^2 / 4, but the shear force by something else.
