I could use some help in trying to understand Problem 508 of of the 2008 NCEES Sample Questions and Solutions book - Structural afternoon question. The problem asks for the tensoin force capacity for the 1/4" fillet welds on a 3/4" x 9" plate with a given shear force of 35 kips. I get how to calculate the tension force on the welds (72.38 kips) but don't quite understand why the solution shows taking the resultant as it does.
