How do I become an electrician without having to go through IBEW?

Get hooked up with a local contractor that is willing to take you on as an apprentice or check with local trade schools to see if there are any non-union openings / positions in your area. Once hired, you'll be able to earn your Journeyman's and Master's cards. Be aware that the work will likely be residential and light commercial. Nearly all heavy commercial jobs that the small / local contractors can't get their hands on are tied to the union in one way or another.
