I will say that in IT... specifically programming, management my company doesn't care about degrees. They want to see your work to demonstrate your skills. Many of our coders are self taught.

In engineering, no. I don't see the 4 year degree going away.

 
It sounds like most degrees that should've just been certificates in the first place could easily be replaced and accepted.

That would definitely help bring back some... I can't think of the word I'm looking for... Respect? for a 4 year degree. I think since everyone and their mother has a 4 year degree it's taken something away. That then creates the need for graduate work to set yourself apart from the competition. Hopefully that thought makes sense.
