Good thing I threw my life savings into oil puts this morning.

I heard about this on NPR this morning, but the focus was on the Coast Guard praising the crew for their preparedness - they had very little time to react, and apparently all had to go overboard in their survival suits.

All I could think was, man... I was only ever on one platform in CA that had survival suits, despite water temperatures cold enough to warrant them on every platform. We were just expected to go into the lifeboats, and if we didn't have time for that, to jump ~100 feet into the ocean in our regular coveralls, and "survive" from there. I don't know if it's required nowadays for everyone to have survival suits, but those guys today were lucky that they did.
