NECEES Mechanical PE Reference Manual Released

Dr Barber NCEES seriously needs to pay you for single handedly fixing their screwed up reference manual. Are you an under cover secret NCEES agent ? 😂😂

NECEES Mechanical PE Reference Manual Released

I'm certainly not a vibration expert, but the equation for transmissibilty in 2.15.3 appears to have an extra r^2 term. Can someone check me on that?

Do you like 1.1xCFMxΔT for sensible loads?

I would actually suggest to other people taking the CBT test to try to solve problems with the most basic form of the equation you can think of that you know in your head rather than using the "time saving and convenient" formulas from this NCEES reference manual. There are just way too many...

LMAO trying to calculate mixing of air streams...

I've just been using the non-graphical approach because I don't have a choice lol. That's what made the most sense to me with the tools I had at hand while doing practice problems.

LMAO trying to calculate mixing of air streams...

Are you talking about something like calculating the temperature of two air streams mixing? Can't you just use the mass flows? For example, 100lbm/hr at 50F and 50lbm/hr at 70F so the mixture would be 57F. Or are you talking about something more involved where this technique doesn't work?  I'm...

Do you like 1.1xCFMxΔT for sensible loads?

These equations are in section 9.1.7 of the new reference manual. Personally I don't use these equations. I prefer to start with the "grass roots" equations that have been burned into my brain (Q = mdot*cp*DT and Q = mdot*Dh). Plus I don't trust any convenient formulas from this manual. It's...

MDM CBT exam syllabus per Mechanical Handbook

some of the topics (numerical and calculation based) which are mentioned in the syllabus are not the part of the Handbook , will those topics be the part of the exam or not ? Maybe, maybe not. It says on the NCEES website that they can and will ask you problems outside of the reference manual...

How I Passed the Thermal / Fluid PE exam

PPI has some practice exams formulated for the CBT. They also have an online database of practice problems, quizzes, and two practice exams all updated for CBT. I’ve been using this to study. There are a lot of errors in the solutions but so far this is the best resource I’ve found for solving...

3.9.2,  Properties of Aqueous Solutions of Ethylene Glycol: Units for specific heat are in Btu-°F/lb thermal conductivity is in Btu-ft-°F/hr-ft^2 This error is on all of the glycol charts including the propylene glycol charts. There's still data missing from the steam tables. Table 9.1.15...

MDM CBT exam registration and prep!

That's a good point and I understand where you are coming from. Maybe try posting that question in the chemical section. It might be worth a shot.

MDM CBT exam registration and prep!

You mentioned that your main weakness was supportive knowledge, which I don't think has materials in it. So if I were you I would just do every problem you can get your hands on regarding supportive knowledge. The PPI Learning Hub breaks down the problem categories by the exam categories, so you...

MDM CBT exam registration and prep!

To answer your question about memorizing stuff from the MERM, nobody knows. Nobody has taken the mechanical CBT yet so any responses you get will be people's opinions.  My opinion is that you should focus on the NCEES reference manual. By publishing this manual, NCEES is basically saying "hey...

MDM CBT exam registration and prep!

I am preparing for the CBT HVAC&R exam by doing the following: Solving problems using the PPI Learning Hub online database of practice problems, quizzes, and practice tests. There are some errors in these problems but overall they are pretty good. These problems actually have been...

NECEES Mechanical PE Reference Manual Released

Guys, FYI, I just logged into my account and noticed there is a version 1.1 out. I haven't looked through it yet but I'm thinking they've probably addressed some of the issues. I just skimmed through the new reference manual and all the refrigerant properties charts still have units of...

5.2.2 Transient conduction using lumped capacitance model: The reference manual says to use units for thermal conductivity in Btu-in/hr-ft^2-F in the equation for Biot number. If you use the rest of the units they suggest, the units don't work out. Should be in Btu/hr-ft-F. It would be better...

Dr. Barber, Are you reporting all of this to NCEES? I haven't reported anything in hopes that you were, lol! If you're already doing this then I won't bother. I'm one of the poor people that is taking the exam in April with this reference.
