    Errors in NCEES practice exam

I'm bumping this thread. So NCEES posted an errata to #509 addressing that the correct torsion is obtained through the shear center but they don't show how to calculate the SC. They just give the location as 15.5 in from the left end. Can anyone direct me on how they got 15.5"?

    What To Do Exam Week

Structural is a discipline where you need a boat load of references and there's no getting around it. There are 10 required reference codes alone, then you may bring the CERM, a foundations book, and so on. I plan on using a carry on type suitcase  :reading:

    What To Do Exam Week

Although I haven't taken the exam yet, I can note that cellphones are absolutely prohibited in the exam room. And if you are found with a phone on your person, on or off, you can be dismissed from the exam.

    Mentor required

You absolutely need to be working the entirety of your 4 years of experience under the supervision of a PE. No one on this forum or anyone working outside of your company can do this. If you need more direction on the application requirements you should call your state board directly.

29 Days to Go. How do you feel?

I feel decent. I took the NCEES practice exam in mock format and scored a 58/80. A couple of mistakes were small like misreading the question or miscalculating. I'm a little nervous on forgetting things from now until exam day. I think I'm going to re-read the structures chapter in the CERM a...

April 2017 Civil PE: Sturctures - Worried :/

I'll put this to rest after this post. I said the questions are based around fundamentals, i.e. beam loading, shear/moment diagrams, calculating section properties, etc. and that's what I recommended studying. I didn't mean to scare anyone into thinking they can't pass without practical...

April 2017 Civil PE: Sturctures - Worried :/

Understanding the theory is key. That way when you get a question unlike any example problems you've had, you can still find the solution. Flow charts and memorization will work only if the right questions come up.

April 2017 Civil PE: Sturctures - Worried :/

I'm not trying to get too defensive here but I never said you needed practical experience to pass this depth. But my opinion was that it would be hard get through the afternoon without exposure to the depth topics on a day to day basis. I agree you could certainly pass this test with zero...

April 2017 Civil PE: Sturctures - Worried :/

So work experience doesn't matter for this test? I'd argue that #1 should be supplemented for design experience. I don't think much of your schooling from 4 years ago is really helping you pass the depth. Undergrad is good in teaching fundamentals but I don't think a semester on...

April 2017 Civil PE: Sturctures - Worried :/

Oh yeah, understand how to calculate section properties (i.e. Section Modulus and moment of inertia) of new or built-up sections. I think there were about 3-4 questions that involved that.

April 2017 Civil PE: Sturctures - Worried :/

As a structural engineer myself and one taking the April 2017 exam here's what I can say from studying so far. I started by reading throughly through the Geotech and Structures sections of the CERM, highlighting important parts, writing helpful notes on how I understood topics as I read them...

    Still Can't Believe It!

Oh man, we have Tired Hands out here but frankly I find their whole eccentricity/pricing/brand to be off putting. Sole is a few hours away but sitting in line for a few hours on my Saturday morning never appeals enough to go to one of their releases. I'd rather just stay home and brew a batch...

    Still Can't Believe It!

I'm extremely jealous. I've wanted to try a Treehouse beer since hearing about them this time last year. But I'm not into shipping/trading beer anymore or driving 6+ hours for beer.

    EET Breadth and Structural Depth

I wouldn't really waste your time studying surveying. There are going to be 2-3 questions in the morning regarding horizontal and vertical curves which you can just follow the CERM for. Spend your time really hitting the structural depth problems hard. They're the ones that aren't plug&chug...

    EET Breadth and Structural Depth

I'm almost through reading/highlighting the entire geotech and structural sections of the CERM. I thin I'll move to water resources next and then take a practice exam when I'm done with WR. That way I can gauge what I need to work on in the month or so leading up to the test.

I'm interested in the older formats of the test and when they switched to the 40 morning multiple choice / 40 afternoon multiple choice
