NCEES Lateral Bridge Exam PM Questions

Bbridge, To show that you know the subject matter, you could have certainly stated in your solution you are assuming that the elastic loads reduced by R are lesser than the inelastic hinging loads. To go through the process of actually determining what the inelastic hinging forces are would be...

    Prestressed question

I agree with VTBridge as well.  Combining P/A + M/S terms in these prestressing problems just makes things more confusing and you forget if you are dealing with compression, tension, top, bottom, etc. Also, watch out for sign conventions. For prestressed, compression is (+) and tension is (-)...

Collecting Codes based on April 2015

It says it on the NCEES website, right above where you download the exam specs. See attached.

Collecting Codes based on April 2015

There will be an update to the SE exam code standards after the exam is given at the end of this month (October 2016). My guess is they will publish the new code standards probably 1st or 2nd week of November. Hopefully they will say that the codes will be the standards for the "2017 exams" or...

    PPI Practice Exam Buildings Question

If you sum moments about the section, given the location of the PNA and using the T-C force = 2665 kips, you will arrive at Mp = 5826 k-ft, which is what the correct answer is. You could solve it that way as well. But the portion of the Mp equation in App. D6 for the slab compression is...

2006 vs 2012 (SEAOC Vol 1 Code App Examples)

Sorry dawg. I thought your post said you were taking the exam this October. If you are waiting until April then wait until the SE exam code standards are released per VTBridge's post above.

2006 vs 2012 (SEAOC Vol 1 Code App Examples)

I used the 2006 version of the manual to study for the SE when it was based on IBC 2009, but there was not a big difference between them because both referenced ASCE 7-05.  IBC 2012 and the Manual now references ASCE 7-10 and there are some differences between it and ASCE 7-05, including the...

Is it worth it to take the SE exam?

It's a guess, but they have had the same standards for a while now and most of the codes they reference now have newer editions out. So, that's all I'm going on.

    Lateral bridge PM study material

Thanks for the good words about my book! I have the lateral bridge book as well that has 40 wind and seismic practice problems. Including seismic detailing, etc.  Good luck on the lateral exam!

Is it worth it to take the SE exam?

Bcarvi2, I think you get the idea on whether or not you should take the exam. You definitely should! My guess is you are fairly young (under 40), and if this is your chosen professional you should strive to accomplish as much as you can. On the consulting side of things, having an SE is almost...

    SE Exam Prep.

I was more referring codes being "ripe" in that NCEES will reference the newer code. But, yes, you are correct the changes to the AASHTO code from 6th to 7th edition are not major. However, there are some changes, and NCEES has been known to put questions on there that are purposely written to...

    SE Practice Problems

Punching Shear, I would still get it the SEAOC book. Most of the problems are solved "by hand" and it will be a great help to go through the examples "by hand." Especially since we typically use computers/software to do a lot of our calcs, etc. Plus what Ian (TehMightyEngineer) said above.

    SE Practice Problems

Punching Shear, Thanks for buying my book. I really appreciate it! In the Tip and Recommendations portion of my book I list the study guides that I used during my studies. Those should be sufficient, but you may also want to get the AISC design examples since it's a free download. The PPI...

    SE Exam Prep.

I'd be willing to bet there will be a code change for the April 2017 exam.  I know the last code change for AASHTO was between October 2013 and April 2014, so it's been 2 years for that one.  The codes that are "ripe" for changing are AASHTO, IBC, ACI 318, TMS 402/602. We will find out in November.

    SE Exam Prep.

There aren't any classes in person that I know of. I think all of them are online. Some are live, and some may be recorded.  I teach half of the SE exam review course for PPI. (www.ppi2pass.com) It comes with about $400-$500 worth of study guides/books along with live on-line lectures. The...

    Help for SE Bridge References

Thanks for kind words guys!   FYI, we will be using my book in PPI's SE Exam Review course going forward. You will receive a copy of the book when you sign up for the class. VTBridge - Glad to hear you found my book helpful.

    2016 April Results released

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess I'm just more wondering why NCEES splits it between first time takers and repeat takers. I guess to tell the repeat takers they need to either change things up, study more, etc.

Yeah, I'll retract that statement. Just is a little odd that they give out the results that way. Carry on...

    2016 April Results released

Not sure why the repeat pass rate is always so much lower than first time takers, but it is. Obviously those who do not pass the first time generally aren't ready when they take it again. Maybe NCEES scrutinizes repeat tests more closely? Seems odd to publish pass rates for first time takers and...
