    SE Results are Out

Congratulations on passing Phil!  And thanks for the book recommendation.

    SE Results are Out

Congrats to all that end up passing.  If you did not pass just remember, this is the most difficult engineering exam that NCEES produces.  With experience and additional study, you will get there!  Glad to see a fellow Yellow Jacket "GTJacket" has passed. Congrats!

    David Connor's Bridge Book Question

The interface bars are (2)-#4 bars spaced at 6" o.c.  The area of reinforcement per linear ft is (4) bars per ft. with 0.2 sq. inches per bar.  Therefore, Avf = 0.8 sq in.

    April 2018 Exams - ACI 318-14

PPI's 16 hour SE Exam by Joseph Schuster has the best practice SE Exam essay problems in my opinion.  Also, work out the problems in the NCEES SE exam book.  You may find similar questions on the actual exam as a "thanks" for using their book.

    April 2018 Exams - ACI 318-14

Thanks BlyBrook PE.  Yes 14th edition of the AISC manual.

    April 2018 Exams - ACI 318-14

Yep, the 2018 exams will be based on IBC 2015, and there associated reference codes. ASCE 7-10, ACI 318-14, AISC-13th edition manunal, 2nd edition seismic manual, Masonry-2013, NDS-2015. AASHTO is still 7th edition.

    Waiting

Best of luck to everyone who took the SE exam this weekend! Seems like that past few cycles they have gotten the results out earlier than they did 3-4 years ago when I took it.  That being said I put the over/under date at December 12th.

    Structural System for Lateral Resistance

I think the one on the right is better for a somewhat shorter building without a "core", for the reasons listed above.  Additionally, the diaphragm doesn't cantilever out to the outer columns and you would have to make more robust connections of the diaphragm to the shear walls.  For taller...

    SERM Example 3.20

Ok, the SERM tends to that. The author combines equations and doesn't explain it or show the steps. When I do prestress problems I solve every term separately so I don't forget what I have (or haven't) accounted for.

    SERM Example 3.20

Unless I'm missing something, I think it's just supposed to be Pe/Ag

How many estimated hours of preparation is required for vertical building module?

Oh gosh. It's been so long since I took the PE exam. I looked at the NCEES spec sheet for the structural PE exam, and even though I don't have it listed I think you may want to take a look at PPI's Structural Engineering Reference Manual. I didn't list it as a resource for the SE exam...

How many estimated hours of preparation is required for vertical building module?

https://www.davidconnorse.com/study-calendar See this link. This is an example study calendar that I used. It basically takes the percentages on the NCEES SE exam specification and puts that much time to each area of study. (i.e. more time devoted to seismic reinforced concrete vs. timber...

SE solves problems practice books / question bank

That's a good start MIPE.  Thanks for buying my book! In the beginning portion of my book I list my recommendations for study guide books. In my opinion, if you study those closely, you should be OK.  I highly recommend SEAOC IBC 2012 Seismic Design Manual - Vol. 1, but also the other volumes...

What state to get SE license?

I really got zero questions from IL. Turned application and got my letter from them a few weeks later. However, my boss has been a licensed SE in IL for years, so that may have made the process for me smoother.

What state to get SE license?

Eh, when I passed the SE exam, I put SE after my name on business cards, email signature, etc. because I passed the SE exam. I worked too hard on passing that exam that two letters after my name is OK in my opinion. Hard for me to believe that someone would get too bent out of shape about it...

    Lateral Bridge help

Thanks OH Bridge Guy.  If my work wasn't so hectic I would maybe replace or rework some of the problems in the book(s). But those are good ideas for questions that I'll look into.....someday.

    Lateral Bridge help

BSE - try the CALTRANS Bridge Design Practice that are available as PDFs here:  http://www.dot.ca.gov/des/techpubs/bdp.html Also, thanks for buying my book. Hopefully it helped you out.  Also, I would recommend working each example in the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual Vol. 1.  You may want to...

    October 2017 References

I see that now. Maybe they just haven't gotten around to updating it for 2015 IBC? I think you will like that Steel examples book though. Maybe drop ICC an email and ask if the steel book will be updated to 2015. If not, the 2012 edition would be fine.

    SE RESULTS ARE OUT

Just want to say congrats to everyone that passed. And if you didn't pass, just know you are not alone. Remember, this is the MOST DIFFICULT of all of the engineering exams. Buckle down and you WILL PASS!  That being said, it looks like the pass rates inched up slightly from Oct. 2016. So...

    October 2017 References

Jeez. I didn't even notice that. Yes, don't pay $400 for that book. It should be about $60. Try Ebay, Brown's Engineering Book Store (in Houston), etc. You should be able to find it. The IBC 2015 book will be very similar to IBC 2012.
