Verticals Exam - Incidental Lateral Loads

Yeah, you won't have wind loads on the vertical exam.  "Incidental" lateral loads include lateral earth pressures, surcharges, water/stream pressures, impacts, etc. You probably won't need SDPWS on the vertical exam. But bring it just in case.

    PraaviV

I live is SC and took the SE in SC.  But I took it basically so I could get registered in IL and other states.  After I passed I got my SE license in IL through comity.  I wouldn't think sitting for the exam in another state would affect getting your license in IL, once you meet their criteria.

    Average Age to take FE/PE/SE

A lot older than I thought it would be for FE and PE.  I took FE at 22, PE at 26.  I waited a little while for the SE though.  39 when I passed the SE.

    SE Exam Buildings vs. Bridges

I wouldn't think of the essay questions as "writing an essay" like you did in English class. The essay questions are more like working out the problems by hand, showing your calculations, citing applicable code provisions, writing out some explanations if necessary.  You probably will also have...

    How is depth graded/scored?

My guess is there is certain things they are looking for and if you get 1/2 of the things they are looking for, you get 1/2 credit for that.  But hard to know the threshold for acceptable, need improvement, unacceptable, etc. I do know that you can reference tables in the codes (i.e. tables in...

    Reference Books during Test

Not that I know of. It will be more of a function of how much room you have around you. When I took the exam in SC we were able to have a full "2-person" table to ourselves, which was nice. I definitely had books all over that table and didn't need to have them on the floor.

    S.E exam books

Not sure where you heard I was proficient in masonry design, but I have done some masonry walls before. :)  .  Anyway, I don't know all of the differences between the 2011 and 2013 masonry code so I would bring the code that the test is based on. I have heard others say that they had questions...

    S.E exam books

Yeah, AASHTO 6th and 7th editions changes are fairly minor. You could probably get away with using the 6th on the exam, BUT, they have been known to ask questions where if you use an older code the answer is there, but it is incorrect since you are using the old code.  The 8th edition has...

    Code coefficients and tables

Sounds like some of the replies above are saying it's better to "read" the code rather than working out problems that test you on how to "use" the code. I disagree with this. Simply reading the code does not give you the context of what the code provisions are intended for. There is no way you...

    SE Exam Buildings vs. Bridges

I think you would want to take buildings if there is a state out there that only accepts the SE building exam.

when will i find out April SE code?

Seems like lately they have been using the same codes throughout a calendar year. But there is no "policy" that I know of that says they will always follow that schedule. The code changes for the last few years have seemed to take place after the October exam.

AEI SE Vertical Building - April 2020

Please note that the NCESS - SE exam practice book problems are considered easier than the exam.  Especially the multiple choice problems.

    SE Exam Oct 2019 Result

Yeah, the pass rate for repeat takers tends to hover around 25%.  Some have been higher, some lower.  The low pass rates is basically the crux of why this forum exists.  To try to help everyone to pass this exam.  But yes, the overall pass rate seems to be in the 30-40% range.  It's not an...

    S.E exam books

Definitely split up the components. I took lateral first because it was easier to study for. Vertical has such broad base of questions that could be asked.  Definitely the SEAOC IBC Seismic Design Manuals for lateral. Just study those and maybe take a review course and you should be OK for...

    SE Exam Oct 2019 Result

Agreed, if you have already received an "A" on a past exam essay question, then that "A" should "trickle-down" to your following exams somehow. Maybe even make the threshold (2) "A"s like what you have done. Might be a bookkeeping nightmare for NCEES, but that seems like a fair deal to me. ...

    SE Exam Oct 2019 Result

Every year that I can recall the results came out well before Christmas. Even with Thanksgiving being late this year, I think it will be this week for sure.  You will probably figure out the results are in by checking your email and MyNCEES before the NCEES chat person will be able to say...

    SE Exam Buildings vs. Bridges

The 16 hour SE exam format has always been the same.  Mornings everyone does the same exam.  40 multiple choice questions - About 10-12 of those questions will cover bridges.  So if you are a "building" engineer you will need to have at least some knowledge of bridge structural engineering. ...

when will i find out April SE code?

I think historically they have made the code changes after the October exams, but I don't think it's a "policy", just the usual case.

    License Experience in Georgia?

Oh, OK, they are talking about PE vs. SE.  Didn't catch that.  Still a weirdo rule!

    License Experience in Georgia?

If you aren't supposed to get continuing education in structural engineering, being a STRUCTURAL ENGINEER, then what are supposed to get it in?  Underwater basket weaving?  There's got to be a misunderstanding somewhere.     http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/068/068014800001850R.html
