Don't forget also, if you don't have all the codes, that will take time to buy them, or print them out. Also, once you get the codes expect it to take a week or 2 just to tab the codes. You will need to tab your codes because the time it takes for you to solve a problem is just as important as...
Yeah, the PPI Timber book does not go over diaphragms and shear walls. You pretty much have to study the IBC code and SDPWS (watch those footnotes!) for wood lateral. NDS also has a solved examples problems book, for NDS 2005 though, but the concepts should still be the same.
MIPE,
My suggestion is to do 1 component at a time, but if your boss is breathing down your neck you should maybe go ahead and do both. Even if you don't pass 1 or both components you will at least have had the experience of taking the exam and can gauge its difficulty.
These are the study...
NMStruc,
See how you like volumes 2 & 3 to see how the examples are laid out. Volumes 2-4 are more like "entire building" examples vs. Vol. 1 which is more individual problems. If you like 2 & 3, then also get 4. The book's value for their price are worth it, even if you aren't studying...
I can't recommend anything better than the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual, Vol. 1. Although Vols. 2-4 are also very good.
For wind get the ASCE 7 Guide to Wind Load Provisions.
For bridge problems I recommend the book that I wrote. Bridge Problems for the SE Exam: Lateral Loads.
PPI's 16 Hour SE...
You will need to have the AASHTO code for the exam and for when you are studying bridge questions, whether you are using my book or not.
While I tried to cover as much as I could in the books, there are LOTS of things they could come up with to ask.
AASHTO has put out a version of AASHTO for...
If you bought my book before the 2nd edition came out and you would like a pdf of the additions and revisions made to the 1st edition, please drop me a line at [email protected].
Congratulations to everyone who passed!
And if you didn't, do not get discouraged. This is the most difficult of all of the engineering exams. Use what you have learned from the experience and knock it out of the park next time!
For those of you looking to buy my book, please make sure you...
Usually it takes another week or so to get out SE exam scores, although it seems like that last few times the results have been coming earlier. Process is getting streamlined.
I also taught the course this past session. One thing that I will add in regards to the homework:
Some of the problems are assigned from a PPI book that, in my opinion, has examples that are too detailed for the SE exam. Some of the problems would take 2 hours to work through. For those...

I'm working on updating my bridge book now. There are some significant changes, so may need 7th edition. There will be 12 new pages in my book that goes through these changes, but some are so extensively that you would need the new code. It did affect 2 of the problems in my book (1 vertical and...
Thanks for buying my book pkarna77!
Generally, those references that I mention in my book and what you have seen here should be enough for you for the essay questions as well. For the Lateral Building exam, if there is only 1 book that I would say is an absolute must is the SEAOC IBC 2012...
