force needed to overcome water drag

If it’s for the PE exam (the focus of these boards) then a sphere would be a bad idea simply because the correlation for drag on a sphere is not in the reference handbook (I think) Also, we’re getting into “spherical cow in a vacuum” territory: Spherical cow - Wikipedia

force needed to overcome water drag

If it’s for the PE exam, perhaps you can model it as a flat plate (or two plates) and use the correlations for the drag coefficient. Then from there you can get the drag force.

    2019 NCEES Problem #73

Probably a good idea to memorize that the thermal efficiency of any heat engine is the ratio of the net power produced by the heat input, yes. This is in the reference handbook in a couple of places (poorly organized, IMO). Referring to version 1.3: First, you see it in page 266 under the...

Version 1.3 of NCEES reference handbook for Mechanical Engineering is out

The units of dynamic viscosity in this table were correct before (in version 1.2), and now (version 1.3) they're wrong.

Version 1.3 of NCEES reference handbook for Mechanical Engineering is out

Hi all, We're currently reviewing to see if we can figure out what changed... As per an email from NCEES "a small number of technical and editorial changes are indicated by a change in the second number" -- but they do not explicitly announce what those changes are.

PE Thermal & Fluid Sys: Energy Equation

Typically in hydraulics/incompressible fluids problems one would use the so-called "Extended Bernoulli Equation" with terms of energy per unit weight, so that the terms have dimensions of length (dynamic head, elevation head, pressure head, pump head, friction head loss, minor head losses, etc)...

Version 1.2 of NCEES Mech. Handbook is out now -- what's new?

We asked them about what changed and this is all we got:  We do not publish errata for PE handbooks. Major revisions are indicated by a change in the first number; a small number of technical and editorial changes are indicated by a change in the second number; and a small number of minor...

Version 1.2 of NCEES Mech. Handbook is out now -- what's new?

Section 3.8.8 Open Channel Flow is brand new. It only has one equation: the definition of the Froude number and no equations useful to make open channel flow calculations.
