Non-traditional ME student frustrated beyond belief.

Late to this thread, but I have only very rarely seen GPA matter. It can matter mostly when applying for very high demand jobs where it is used just as a way to whittle down the number of applicants. But I have known many engineers who told me (later) that they had low GPAs but they were...

Retired Engineer Being Charged for Practicing w/o a License

I'm not sure, but perhaps what crossed the line into "practice of engineering" was calling himself an engineer in a court of law, and claiming the advice he was giving was engineering advice? If we accept that the main purpose of engineering licensing is to protect the safety of the public...

Travel!! Where are you headed; Where do you want to go? Where have you been?

My family trip is all lined up. This will be the most expensive trip I have ever taken. Renting a minivan for 23 days in Colorado is costing us about $3600. Then we have hotel expenses and meals because my parents can't have us in their house anymore - probably about the same or more than the...

What's the Work From Home situation?

Employers are NOT prohibited from asking you about your vaccination status. HIPAA only prohibits your health care organization from sharing your information with someone other than you, without your permission. But anyone else can ask, even a store employee...

Graduated in May 2020 and still no job

They do design and construction of water and wastewater systems and healthcare facilities on Native American Reservations and Alaska Native Villages. Very rewarding work, and a great mix of old-school design and construction responsibility as well as contracting. So as a mechanical engineer...

What's the Work From Home situation?

State-level government here, we've been back to 50% in-office work since January. That's a minimum in-office time, though. We have so many vacancies that even if everyone was 100% in-office we would still be pretty sparse, so several of us just work in-office all the time now. I find that I am...

Graduated in May 2020 and still no job

Check out federal government job listings for the Indian Health Service on USA Jobs. They're always looking for engineers to work on projects to help Native Americans, and applicants willing to move and live in remote areas for a while. If you get a job with IHS, you can also pursue getting...

Travel!! Where are you headed; Where do you want to go? Where have you been?

Thanks for the advice. We're carefully/tactfully checking with friends there if they have spare cars (dropping hints as in, "we were going to visit, but we can't find a rental car"), but I'm leaning 80/20 toward cancelation. I guess the world really has changed... We'll just stick with...

Travel!! Where are you headed; Where do you want to go? Where have you been?

Yeah... we're going to fly in to Anchorage and rent there. But I just checked and the internet is telling me there are zero rental cars available. I guess we're ******. WTF is happening? I didn't think cars could catch COVID....

Travel!! Where are you headed; Where do you want to go? Where have you been?

We're planning on a 1 week visit to AK and Fairbanks later in June, then visiting family in Colorado. Both places are pretty hot for COVID right now so I'm hoping (counting on) things getting under control by the time we travel, but we're all vaccinated and my parents aren't doing particularly...

    2019 Novel Coronavirus

^I think this has been apparent to anyone who has been paying attention and especially to those of us with some education in the air transport of pollutants. You cough and speak and expell little droplets containing the virus and other particles. Some of those droplets fall out of the air...

    2019 Novel Coronavirus

I saw a modeling study a few months ago that said when you reach about 40% vaccinated, new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths drop by around 80%. So it's not a bad target, given all the "vaccine hesitant" people (= A holes).

    Movie thread

King Kong vs Godzilla was okay, exactly what you would expect from the title. I got the feeling that I had missed several prequels, but I also got the impression that that was because of ****** writing, not that I had missed anything. But seeing King Kong wake up and scratch his *** made it...

    2019 Novel Coronavirus

I guess the messaging about vaccination being mostly about protecting others is lost on these folks. Even with polio, 70% of cases are asymptomatic, and less than 1% resulted in flaccid paralysis, yet the Greatest Generation made damn sure everyone did their civic duty to protect those who were...

    2019 Novel Coronavirus

Oh and here's the up-to-date version of the KFF graph above. This is an excellent web page if you want to explore vaccination attitudes and how they are changing in real time: https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/dashboard/kff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-dashboard/ And here's a screen grab...

    Movie thread

I am going to go to a real movie theater for the first time since March 15, 2020. I have managed to get my entire family vaccinated and my 17 y.o. son hits his 14th day post-Pfizer today, so we agreed we'd go see a movie tomorrow night. Covid cases are very low where we are right now, so the...

    2019 Novel Coronavirus

Yeah the incentives need to be centered around bars, sports and NASCAR to get to that remaining 40% who think the vaccine will turn them into 5G cellphone towers.
