  1. I was hoping someone can help explaining questions 60 & 61 on the FE Civil NCEES sample exam. I got the solutions, but they somehow skipped over the explanation part where they came up with the answers. I've always struggled when it comes to determining whether a truss member is being subjected by Tension or Compression when a line of influence is given. For some experienced structural engineers, they seem to be able to determine exactly whether it's Tension or Compression just by looking at the picture whereas I have to go through the lengthy analysis to figure it out. Are there some

  7. This is true, but you can get by with having other team parents help to take your kids during weekdays. Team parents that are available during weekdays are very nice and are willing to let kids hitch rides all the time. The kids become good friends. Wife & I both work full time, so we swing by after work if the meets are close by and watch the remainder of the meets. Big events usually take place on weekends so we're available to go for the whole thing. We return the favors to other parents by taking their kids on the weekends while they run errands etc. You're right; It's difficult
  8. My kids did/done/do (not sure which verb to use, 'cause all 3 apply ) swim team, but not until HS age for their respective high school. However, there are a few local teams ranging from Elementary - High school ages, but these are not affiliated with any of the schools. These local teams are somewhat private, but funded by parents paying fees to be on the team. They train swimmers to go all the way to National Championships as well as Olympics so they are very competitive. We didn't do that. Our kids simply join the HS swim team to compete with other regional high school teams. Travel di

  10. @knightfox3: Sorry to hear about your pet. We too try to keep things like this in the back of our minds, but having pets is hard when you know there will be that DAY. It's hard to think about it so we all try to enjoy the company with our pets for as long as we can. We found 2 stray (or lost) cats in our yard all beat up, skinny, and afraid. It took us awhile to get them to know us by leaving food/water and then walk away for them to come eat/drink. After a few weeks of doing that, we got both of these cats to come to us and they do love us; not only for the food/water sometimes, but jus
  11. This looks good, but it takes an hour to cook wheat berries! It's going to be a weekend project. Probably going to just have some fruits and nuts today as I'm short on time - too many meetings.
  12. California egg benedics lined with tomatoes + red onion and topped with avocado, sided by hash brown, bacon, and then I added a full side of onion rings; I probably overdid it, but couldn't help myself
  13. KatyLied's prep is awesome! To add to the prep for NEC & NESC, you should always bring the right version referred to by the NCEES. There ARE differences between different release year of NEC and NESC and your answers do make a difference which year you use (I know this for a fact through negative experience of others). NESC questions may also appear more than you think. Having a copy of NESC handy is a must. These are easy points if you know where to get the answers quickly. I copied the index of NEC and combined it with McHenry to keep in a thin project folder (the one with bent met
  14. Yes, self study with practice exams, some text books & information collected from online & this forum. My experience is that practice exams are hit or miss. When I did the practice exams, the problems were all so easy. On the exam, many questions literally caused me headache. Try to learn the concepts and have a good grasp on basic things like Per-Unit, Voltage Drop, Symmetrical Analysis etc... and work problems forward and backward and try to see if other questions/values maybe asked of you given some different parameters. Georgia Tech course's lecture was about 60% good for me,
