Consulting / Freelance Work Where to Look?

MEP can be tough to get started on. Started my own firm a few years back. Personally worried the economy is gonna squeeze so afraid to hire, sure you’re dealing with that problem everywhere. Used to work for Nasa and that aerospace word can be considered a bad word in a lot of industries...

    Can't find book

Does anyone have a copy of, "light gage steel structural steel framing system design handbook" from LGSI? Trying to buy a copy online and can't find one..

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

Have any of you ever had your calcs reviewed by a 3rd party company? Or are the only people who get to see calcs internal?

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

Is there a set of plans (with calcs) out there for a building that has been vetted by all the appropriate committees that people could reference? Seems like everything's locked up as "proprietary information". I'm in a rural area and the best elec engineer in town retired, he reviewed some of...

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

@structurenole15 Good catch, meant to emphasize your "engineers by discipline" comment. Also surprised the structural portion of civil programs wasn't broken off and made its own thing a long time ago. Its entertaining we have a proctored exam where you're afraid to cough too loudly (and we...

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

May be different in your state. In TX and most states next to us, the stamp between structural, mech, civil, blah, blah, are all the same. Meaning you can "legally" (although highly frowned upon) stamp a structural drawing if you are granted an engineering license from the state and "feel...

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

Agree with @jean15paul_PE. Also everything starts blending together after a while (warning: oversimplication below). Force/Area=Stress Voltage/Current=Resistance Flow/Velocity=Area Mech lowers friction (make pipe bigger) Elec lowers Voltage Drop (make wire bigger) Struct lowers Stress (make...

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

Feel we should do engineering differently, but don’t know how to fix it (disagree with the engineering stamps not being competency based). Feel the tests were 25% applicable to my career. University was about 10% applicable. YouTubing engineering videos seem to better prepare me for the world.

    Get licensed in 2 disciplines?

I’ve passed 3 tests (mech, elec, and civ-str). Most states see it as one license and you do whatever you “feel” competent in.. really it means if you screw up and didn’t pass the right test you can be found competent and negligent, if you pass that test, you can only be found negligent. have 3...

How NOT to study. MY MISTAKES. Civil-Structural, Mechanical, Electrical.

Yea, the ERMs tend to go 5 times deeper than you need 90% of the time. Remember feeling terrible after/during the 2nd half of the tests and most people leave feeling like they've failed or its 50/50. Treat yourself once you're out, closest thing we've got to entering into a coliseum to be...

Best forums for dumb technical questions

Why isn't there a youtube channel where it goes through solving NCEES practice test problems (those would be awesome).. would that be illegal for some reason?

Best forums for dumb technical questions

you right. "useless" was poor word choice. What do you use for sanity checks & catch fat fingering numbers in calculators/programs. do you have a good place for structural concepts/videos/pictures? shear's a booger (in-plane, out-of-plane, transverse, longitudinal reinforcement)

Best forums for dumb technical questions

Where is the best place to go when we need to ask a question we should already know… Electrical seems to have good code interpretations and technical explanations. But haven’t been able to find anything near as good for other engineerings Electrical - Mike holt forum Mechanical - Googling...
