Here is a quick example straight from our live class on how to solve for the power rating of an auto-transformer (solved using both the primary and secondary values) by re-configuring a single-phase 1,000 kVA rated transformer:

A step up auto-transformer rated for 4,160 volts on the primary is configured from a 1,000 kVA rated 4,160V-480V single-phase transformer. Calculate the power rating to the nearest MVA of the new autotransformer.

(A) 0.9

(B) 5

(C) 10

(D) The power rating does not change.
