Are you Civil: Env or strictly Environmental?

My work (and PE) is strictly environmental. My degree is in Civil though.

If my university had an environmental engr degree, I totally would have done that instead!  I floated around a bit because I originally was going to major in biomedical engineering, but didn't have the GPA high enough to get into upper level classes (OOPS but freshman year was hard, for real).  So I figured environmental engineering would be a good fit because I like math, biology, and chemistry :)  I got into remediation because it was the path I was most interested in (would never want to do water treatment, no offense to my water treatment enviros).  And it worked out!  I really enjoy what I do - not too design heavy but work on really interesting projects and learn a lot :)

I started out as an environmental engineering major (my University offered it) and switched to civil when I realized how much chemistry I would have had to take. It turns out, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I did.

I don't actually deal with a *ton* of chemistry day-to-day - mainly analytical for methods we want to use to analyze our GW/soil samples.  Though am starting to get more into it now that I'm learning groundwater remediation, which is interesting! Chem questions while studying for the PE were super hard though...thankfully husband is a chem professor so I was able to pick his brain :p

I am sure you deal with way more math day to day as a structural engineer, but the heaviest math I do now requires just area or volume calcs, if even that. Kind of funny, all that hardcore math I had to take and forgot all of it...

My structural classes were hands down my hardest in college, mad respect to structural engineers.  My buildings would all collapse if I were a structural engr.

It is.  Husband is pretty dang smart. I could understand the first two slides of his PhD defense, then I was like  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  for the rest

It's called "dazzling" and it's so you don't notice the remaining 158 pages consist of made-up nonsense! ^_____^

My husband majored in Philosophy and is basically a salesperson for a tech company, haha!

I do deal with math pretty much every single day, but most of it isn't past simple algebra. If it's really complicated, we usually have a program doing it... Though I probably should do a few more of my calculations by hand than I currently do, just so I don't forget what I'm doing.

So I found my college by googling "chemical engineering". Yeah, they dont have a ChemEng program 🤷🏻‍♀️ the chem dept is the same building/floor as the civil & electrical engineering.

I loved chemistry. Ended up taking modern physics for funsies and was 1 course short to be a physics minor. Did get my math minor tho.

I add and subtract. Sometimes I multiply.

I add and multiply. Occasionally divide. And almost never subtract.

@Chattaneer

I'm ISTJ, like @LyceeFruit

Though, I'm close to 50% on my Sensing-Intuition indicator, so I share a lot of traits of the INTJ type.

Also, I'm Civil: Geotechnical, in case anyone is wondering.
