It's actually good to have a side job in case the engineering career goes sour or becomes obsolete.  Sometimes people can't handle the stress or the politics of a job and have to get out no matter what but don't have any idea what to do.  Sales is the only profession that gets fired more often than engineers and most sales people just move into another sales position.  Not always so easy for an engineer especially if they are within a very specialized segment of industry.

This should actually be opposite of how it really works. In a specialized segment, you are more likely to know the other limited amount engineers and engineering firm who are in the same field. This should make it easier to market yourself since you already have the experience, and there won't be a giant pool of candidates looking for a job in that field
