I vaguely remember there being some sort of straight forward correlation between the number of blow counts in the dynamic cone penetrometer test and the ultimate bearing capacity of in-situ soil? Can anyone point me to any online resources.

 
Check the document by Sowers and ASTM STP 399. You should develop your own correlations for the soil types in your area of practice.
