The Sigma Leadership Programme fast-tracks our potential leaders to the top. Participants take on challenging roles across our business over three years, all helping to hone your engineering skills.

For individuals with the right combination of leadership potential and engineering competence, we offer the Sigma Leadership Programme in Engineering. Essentially a fast-track to leadership, this programme will see you tackle a range of roles over a three-year period. Roles could be anywhere in BAE Systems, but all will help you to hone your engineering expertise to support your route to becoming a Chartered Engineer. Also, you’ll be encouraged to undertake an international assignment to further support your development. You’ll engage with the complexities of our products. You’ll discover what makes BAE Systems tick. And most importantly, by the end of the programme, you’ll have the core skills and behaviours to be an engineering leader of the future and take up a substantive role at executive level. Welcome to Engineering in the real world.

What you’ll need

To apply, you’ll need to have a minimum 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, mathematical or scientific subject. In addition, our Sigma Engineering positions require Security Clearance with its associated requirements of five years residency in the UK.  As a highly intensive and challenging programme, you’ll also require exceptional personal qualities. You’ll be analytical, adaptable and highly resilient. You’ll need to be able to build strong relationships with people quickly, be passionate about continuous improvement and have a desire to inspire others to maximise their performance. Although not essential, many people currently on the programme also have real work experience prior to joining.

Where could you be?

The Sigma Leadership Programme could see you working in any of our UK locations so we require you to be geographically mobile. We also encourage you to undertake one international assignment.

Learning and Development

From the outset, you’ll be invited to the Engineering Sigma Steering Groups which provide a forum for Sigmas to discuss their development plans for the scheme with senior leaders within the business and to seek advice regarding future roles. In addition, you will be assigned your own personal buddy – a current Sigma - who’ll support you in your transition onto the scheme. Over the long term, you’ll also have both a corporate and functional mentor to guide your development and leadership skills. Additionally, there's financial and practical support to gain further relevant qualifications and accreditations within either business or engineering. Engineers are expected to gain chartered engineer status and the programme is accredited by a number of relevant institutions. From our perspective, it represents a major, long-term investment in real leadership potential.

Sigma workshops are run regularly, which provide an opportunity for all Sigmas to convene and engage in activities designed to develop their understanding of an element of the business. Additional activities are encouraged whilst on the Sigma Leadership Programme as an additional means of development. This may be undertaking a role as a STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) Ambassador, contributing to corporate working groups or writing group strategy & policy. Community Investment projects are also undertaken, which have recently included revamping a hospice and taking part in the Prince’s Trust Million Makers Challenge.
