MUTCD Part 6 TA31

Hi, can somebody explain to me Typical application 31 (TA 31) figure 6H-31 MUTCD Part 6

1- What is the point of the lane closure at the left side (heading North to South) while the work zone is totally in the other direction?

2- Why channelizing devices are in use (refer to attachment)

A. between both directions just above the double yellow lines.

B. small portions to divide the between the lanes to the right side, also how can I determine its length.

This application is for a closure on a road with uneven directional volume.

Figure 70% Northbound ..... you want to maintain the existing 2 lanes and you can afford to shut down one southbound lane.

Taper lengths and how to calculate can be found on page 557 in the MUTCD.

1. Like John said, the lane closure in the S/B direction is to maintain two lanes in the N/B direction. (I guess we are assuming north is up)

2. Those hash marks you point to (A and B) are not channelizing devices, they indicate the removal of conflicting existing striping.
