Hello all,

I'm looking to build a house outside of the USA . And I was hoping that I could design the entire structure, but I don't feel like I have all the necessary tools to start my design. What would you recommend (forget about permits and miscellaneous) to prepare myself before I start. Oh, and also beware that this is a long term plan, I'm not looking to build this tomorrow. I studied structures in college but have been doing mostly transportation since graduation and feel that I'm wasting my time since I love structures and just happen to be really good at transportation. I'm concerned from a structural design point of view (example: Books to read, softwares, start point, so on). Thanks, I hope I can find some guidance.

I moved this thread because it is not related to the PE Exam.

My quick advice, without knowing more, would be to hire a professional who is proficient in the design field(s) that you are not. Good luck.
