Is the maximum deceleration rate given, if so just use formulas from table 71.1 in CERM to determine the compression length. See prob 92 in 6 mins.

Civil, see Chapt 8 of AASHTO's Roadside Design Guide (Barrier End Treatments and Crash Cushions). I think Table 8.4, pg 8-35, has what you are looking for.

Much like a hydraulic problem, this type of question can ask for any one of the parameters (compression length, max deceleration, initial speed, factor of safety). Be prepared to be able to rearrange the equation to isolate the parameter in order to solve it.
