  6. Is anyone else confused with the solution to #523 in the NCEES MDM practice exam? To paraphrase the question: given a ring and pinion gear pair, what happens if you decrease the number of teeth on the ring gear? A) The vehicle acceleration will increase B) The vehicle speed at a given engine rpm will increase C) Both A and B are true D) Both A and B are false The answer is (B). What I can't figure out is a comment in the solution that says that reducing the rear wheel torque reduces the car's acceleration. The relationship between pinion/gear speed and number of gear teeth is pretty straightforward from MERM (eq. 59.25). But how is the torque on the output gear (the ring gear) reduced? My thinking is based on eq. 54.45: torque_gear * speed_gear = torque_pinion * speed_pinion Since we have already established that the gear speed is reduced, and holding the torque and speed of the pinion constant, the only way to satisfy eq. 54.45 is for the gear torque to increase, not decrease. Meaning that (C) would be the correct answer.

  9. In case you missed it, in addition to the new exam specifications this year NCEES® also released an updated edition of their official practice exam for the Electrical Power PE exam. Scared yet? Don't be. The main takeaway is that surprisingly there are only 7 new questions on the new practice exam, the rest are exactly the same. In addition, some of the exam subjects that were removed on the new exam specifications are still on the new practice exam. This means you need to be prepared and ready to solve these types of problems even though they are no longer on the updated specs, so be careful here. Also, each of the new 7 questions that appear in the updated NCEES® practice exam are NOT any of the new subjects that were added to the new exam specifications. What does this all mean? Well, I think it supports my hunch that the new subjects are areas that were previously being tested on and NCEES® is trying to be more clear about their expectations by updating the exam specifications. At this point, if you are taking the PE exam then you should be asking yourself these following questions if you want to be prepared: Should I buy the new $39.95 NCEES® practice exam if I already have the older practice exam? What are the subjects of the new questions on the updated practice exam? What subjects did the new questions replace that were on the older practice exam? What subjects are still on the new practice exam that have been removed from the newer exam specifications? Is there any other insight that can be gained by comparing the new practice exam to the new specs? Does this mean the PE exam is harder? We did the research for you and just published a new article to address all of the above and more. You can read the full length article here: Electrical PE Review - New 2018 NCEES Practice Exam for the Electrical Power PE Exam As always, if you have any questions I would be more than happy to answer you.
  10. Hello everyone, I've been preparing for the MDM exam in April for quite some time now and came across a pratice exam by Scott Hart and Kevin Klein. I find that these problems are much more difficult than those from the NCEES practice exams. Have any of you had a similar experience? The material is good, but I don't think it did much to boost my confidence level even after practicing with material from PPI, 6-min. solutions, both NCEES practice exams (2011 and 2016), EngProGuides and Dr. Tom. I just want to make sure I'm not off base here. Still practicing like mad for the exam.... Thanks for the read and comments.
  11. ME_VT_PE

I have purchased the Engproguides TFS practice exam in preparation for the April 2018 PE. Compared to the Lindberg practice exam, these questions seem much easier. Does anyone (taken the pe and seen the engproguides practice exam) have any insight?
  12. Question: "Refer to 2014 edition of the NEC. What is the minimum required size for single-insulated, 60degreeC, TW copper conductors feeding a 460V 3-ph AC motor rated 150hp operating on continuous duty? A. 4/0 AWG B. 300 kcmil C. 400 Kcmil D. 500 Kcmil " I got B, 300 kcmil. Per NEC 430.250, FLC = 180A. Per NEC 430.22 for continuous duty, conductors must be 125% of FLC. The book picked A. Please reply if you agree or disagree and why. Thanks.
  13. Hi guys, I hope everyone is having fun for the preparation of the exam. I found this Free exam online SlaythePE, which has 80 problems and they claim it is the same format as the new spec in 2017. However, you need to pay $80 to get the step by step answers. (sorry to disappoint you). My questions are: Did anyone purchase the SlaythePE practice exam answers? Are they helpful? How is that in comparison to the 80-problem practice exam by Justin Kauwale? ($40 only) What other resources of practices problems besides the 2016 NCESS practices exam and the Six-Minutes Solution do you guys recommend? (I assume most people have both) What about the Mechanical PE Practice Examination (MEPE3) by Lindeburg? ($68) Thank you all and enjoy the rest of the study! P.S. Their site also has other useful stuff, i found the Mach Number chart is pretty cool.
  14. Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I am selling my PE exam prep materials for the Mechanical HVAC exam. These are the only materials I studied with and the only references I brought with me to the exam. Using only these, I passed the October 2016 exam on my first try! Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 13th edition by Lindeburg ($250) Practice Problems for the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam, 13th edition by Lindeburg ($85) PE Mechanical Engineering: HVAC and Refrigeration Practice Exam by NCEES ($30) Six-Minute Solutions for Mechanical PE Exam HVAC and Refrigeration Problems, 2nd edition by Elder ($65) I bought these materials new and did not write in any of them - so they are in "like new" condition. I have photos ready to send, if interested. I will sell individually for prices listed (add $10 for shipping each) - or will sell as a set for $400, including shipping. Prices are firm and I prefer to use PayPal. I almost don't want to sell these because they remind me of my triumph over the behemoth that is the PE exam :-) but I know they could be helping someone else. Thanks, Ryan

Since in my field not too many people give this particular exam, so I am not too familiar with the process and how to study for the exam. Can someone please suggest some study materials or practice exams to prepare for FE?? Also, please share your experience about the exam, if you've given it. Thanks a lot!
