  2. I found quite a few CPM videos on YouTube which were helpful in explaining the scheduling problems.
  3. Yes. It is helpful. I used it for at least one problem each time I took the exam. I think I paid about $15 online.
  4. I took the Construction depth....and I am one of those who passed. This was not my first time taking the construction depth. I had difficulty in the passed preparing for the various topics covered under construction. I must say that the new NCEES study guide for the Construction depth helped me prepare for a good portion of the problems I saw. I would recommend purchasing this guide for those looking to take the construction depth.

  7. I am curious as to Problem #117 of the NCEES Civil Sample Questions & Solutions book. The problem provides a "net total dynamic head" and a flow. It asks you to determine which type of single-stage impeller would be the most efficient to use. Using the CERM, I know that I can solve this problem with the following equation: ns = (n*SQRT(Q)) / (hA^0.75) [EQ: 18.28b] Where: ns = what I am solving for to determine the type of impeller Q = flow (GIVEN as 10cfs) hA = net total dynamic head (GIVEN as 1200ft) n = speed in rpm The answers reference that you should be able to find the solution problem with the HYDRAULIC DESIGN HANDBOOK, MAYS. And viewing the solution, apparently you are able to determine the missing "n" value as 1800 rpm. I do not have the aforementioned reference manual, and cannot seem to find with the CERM how to determine "n." Can someone help me with this problem? Is there another way to "know" how to determine the rpm of an impeller?

  11. Maybe I need to be a bit more specific with my inquiry... attached is one sample problem for the morning session. The solution is as follows: "Tube sections are better able to resist lateral torsional buckling than channel, wide-flange, and double-angle sections and are therefore generally more efficient for use as beams with long unbraced lengths." The correct answer is A. You do not see too many tube sections as beams, so intuitively, I would not choose a tube as my first choice. Therefore, how would you go about ensuring that you are not caught using bad intuition?
  12. Attached is a problem regarding hauling dirt from a construction site and determining the productivity rate. The solutions manual says that you should use the "Bank Density" for the calculation. However, my first instinct would be to use the "Loose Density" since the dirt in the ground (bank) would be disturbed and have swell introduced. As you can see in my work, using either of the two densities given provide an answer which is shown. The solutions indicate that Answer D is correct. Can someone explain why you would use bank density instead of loose? Let's be careful with copywrited material. Just reference people to their copy of the sample exam. Thanks. SapperPE
  13. There is a problem I have encountered in the past which has several different cross sections of comparable size, such as a W-Beam, C-Channel, L-Channel, Hollow Tube, etc... The question asks something like "which of the following sections is stronger." I am drawing a blank as to what they mean and how to solve it. I assume that they may be referring to which section would have the higher moment of inertia, thus can carry the most bending stress.
  14. I bought the book. On the surface, I think that it is setup in a format how ALL the references offered by PPI should be formated. The book has 40 questions with solutions for each in the back. Nothing too different than any other book. What I do like about it that does not appear in the other books I have is the inclusion of "Tab Notes" which tell you where in the CERM you can find the necessary formulas to solve the problem. The problems seem to be similar in nature as any of the other books out there. Maybe a bit on the "simplistic" side. However, from the past two times I have sat for the exam, I have found the problems listed to be pretty the point that I spent too much time re-reading and trying to find the "catch." So it has been nice to review easier problems. Mainly to calm the nerves before Friday.
  15. I just now noticed this reply. I anonymously (as much as one could be discrete) informed the proctors during the break that there were unauthorized books in the room. I even provided them with descriptions in case they were uninformed as to what I was talking about. Unfortunately, nothing was done about this after the break. I did contact Continental Testing after my first exam to insure that I was interpreting their rules correctly and even provided them with examples of my experiences. I was reassured that my interpretation of what was and was not allowed into the exam room was correct and that they will inform the proctors in the future of this issue. The core to my "vent" is not the fact that individuals are knowingly disregarding the rules when it comes to references, it is more that the State of Illinois adds additional restrictions upon allowed references above what NCEES deems as standard. Maybe I am part of the minority but when I come across a problem which needs a reference, I go back to a compiled book of personal notes and examples, not the shelves of textbooks collecting dust in my office. I believe that we should be allowed to utilize a binder of our personal notes for this "open book" exam. With the limited time available to work all the problems, you need to be efficient in applying your knowledge not efficient in rifling through your traveling library. Anyhow, like I prefaced my initial post, this topic was more about venting a frustration. I still understand that in the end it is up to me and me alone to achieve a passing score.
