Anyone have any thoughts on a materials to use for asphalt pavement marking in terms of cost effectiveness and durability?

I know of three types.

1. Waterborne paint: Lease expensive and usually used in temporary applications

2. Hot Thermo Plastic - more expensive but more durable than waterborne

3. Epoxy - Most durable and most expensive, usually used on concrete surfaces.

Hope that helps. Also you will want to apply glass beads to the paint for reflectivity.

Thanks Mike! I've got specs for all the materials you mentioned. There was a project completed a year or two ago in the same area with the markings already more or less completely failed... something I'd like to avoid. As best I can tell no specified the type of material to use or was paying attention when it was being applied.

Paint should only be used for interim markings, never for permenant. Cost doesn't even play a role in it, paint just doesn't last.

Epoxy is used for long-term markings. Years ago you also used to see a specification for polyester pavement markings for long lines only (special pavement markings were still Epoxy) - but many Agencies have switched to Epoxy for everything.

Agreed: stripe should be used in conjunction with glass beads, clean pavement, and pavement temperature should be in spec at the time of application. Use products found on your DOT's Approved List.

If you have snow and ice conditions in your area, only getting 2-3 years out of epoxy markings isn't necessarily out of the norm. Plows, salt and sand destroy markings, regardless of the type of material used.

What region of the country? I'm starting to think a good paint program at intersections is better than the expensive markings.

We put down recessed tape on a roundabout in New England last summer and it took a beating.

Here we use thermoplastic for asphalt and multi-polymer for concrete.

As said above, paint would only be used in a temporary traffic control area.

inlaid methyl methacrylate, seems to be the only thing that lasts here in AK.
