Excellent article from Supe. Here's the TL;DR:
Steam injection is used in gas turbines for:
- Increasing the output power and cycle efficiency (due to the increase in flow rate going into the turbine without an increase in the compressor's work)
- Decreasing NOx emissions (by reducing the peak flame temperature inside the combustor)

Using gas turbine exhaust gas to generate steam in a HRSG and then injecting that steam into the gas turbine is known as the Cheng cycle. The theoretical analysis is presented here http://www.chengpower.com/cheng_cycle®
