Would you like to perform within our Electrical Power discipline to meet the needs of the submarine solutions internal projects and customer programmes? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Engineer – Power at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Senior Engineer – Power, you will be involved in the design and delivery of submarine power, generation and distribution for the Successor Programme.

This role will give you the opportunity to grow into a technical leader as you will be working within a team of specialist Power Engineers.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Engineer – Power will involve:

• Providing support in the generation of electrical design solutions to agreed time, cost and quality to meet project or business milestones
• Undertaking discrete activities to support; feasibility studies, research, design, development and post design services to meet requirements
• Contributing to the drafting, vetting and editing of technical reports or other documents to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated to stakeholders
• Determining requirements and design standards
• Writing technical reports and technical specifications
• Producing of outline functional system diagrams
• Preparing design calculations to demonstrate designs meet performance requirements. i.e Load, Volt Drop, Fault Levels, discrimination
• Performing power systems modelling and analysis
• Undertaking technical development studies to verify compliance with design requirements

Your skills and qualifications:

• Degree or equivalent experience in Electrical or Electronics Engineering with some accreditation of power theory knowledge
• Power system modelling experience using MATLAB
• Marine, Defence, Nuclear or Aviation industry experience – beneficial
• Experience in performing complex calculations to determine load and fault analysis
• In depth understanding of power system modelling, generators, switchgear; protection, power electronics or rotating machine design

What we're looking for in you:
Ability to guide others through power electronics, have an acute awareness of audience when presenting technical information on the power protection and relevant calculations to ensure stakeholder engagement to the design plan. You will need to have the ability of returning to the theory, proving technical integrity.

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.

Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
