I got A, B, B... 

 
The total volume of exacavation is from sta 0+00 to sta 3+15. Not from sta 1+00 to sta 3+15. Very tricky like the exam. Nice one.

 
I got A, B, B as well. Curious as to how you got C for problem 1, @ptatohed.
Ok, correct me if I am wrong. 

You have three 2D sections, right?  One at 1+00, one at 2+00, and one at 3+15.  H@1+00 = 6', H@2+00 = 7', and H@3+15 = 10'.  The areas are as follows: A@1+00 = 102 SF, A@2+00 = 133 SF, and A@3+15 = 250 SF.  Thus, V = (100)((102+133)/2) + (115)((133+250)/2) = 33,772.5 CF = 1250.83 CY = answer C. 

Thoughts?

 
Ptatohed disregard my comment at sta 0+00. I have the same answer A as Maji and leggo at first attempt. Then I asked myself why ptatohed have different answer at C. Second attempt I included area and volume at station 0+00 and 1+00.  But I know why where the error in calculations. Maji, leggo and me used the trapaziod area formula, which is wrong approach. 

 
I agree with ptatohed's answer and don't see how Irap is coming up with volume at station 0+00. There is no information to indicate if flow line is flush at 0+00 or if it is below the existing grade like the other stations.  Additionally, if you are going to go back 100 feet to station 0+00, whats stopping us from also looking forward to predict station 4+00 or maybe even 10+00.

 
Very tricky as usual... ptatohed is correct... I used 1+00, 2+00 and 3+00 instead of 3+15 for the last one. Great question!!

I did the same. Even when I first read the problem and made a note of it being sta 3+15, not 3+00. Punched it into my calculator incorrectly. That's what you get for not checking your work!

No problem, that's why I posted it.  For practice, discussion, and learning.  And I think all three happened.  :)   To be totally honest, I had A, B, B the first time I did the problems and I even had it typed out in Post #1.  Right before I hit 'Submit', I thought to myself, let me check one more time as it might be a little embarrassing as the thread starter to have wrong answers.  That's when I saw my mistake and changed it to C, B, B.  :)

Goes to show how carefully one needs to approach the exam problems... the "A" answer is a "distractor"... something that many will choose because making a common mistake... 

 
What I thought was interesting is these sample questions don't word their question to include "most nearly" as do NCEES questions.  I thought the state exams used "most nearly" too but I guess not.

I used this formula, Scale Factor = reproduced scale / original scale ; 5 = (1/x) / (1/2000) ; x = 400

AH, thanks for working these problems.  For #2, the current scale is 1" = 2,000'.  Or 1" = 24,000".  Or 1:24,000.  Or 1/24,000.  Right?

They ask you to enlarge the scale.  This means the scale will be closer to 1:1.  So you'll divide the 24000 by 5.  1:(24000/5) -->  1:4800.

I think you are using the correct formula, you just forgot to convert the 2,000 feet to inches so the units on each side are the same.  Basically take your answer of x = 400 and multiply it by 12.

AH, thanks for working these problems.  For #2, the current scale is 1" = 2,000'.  Or 1" = 24,000".  Or 1:24,000.  Or 1/24,000.  Right?

They ask you to enlarge the scale.  This means the scale will be closer to 1:1.  So you'll divide the 24000 by 5.  1:(24000/5) -->  1:4800.

I think you are using the correct formula, you just forgot to convert the 2,000 feet to inches so the units on each side are the same.  Basically take your answer of x = 400 and multiply it by 12. 
Thanks for your prompt reply. This map factor should be easy but i keep getting confused with converting. You are right. I thought 1:2000 is the same as 1" = 2000' which differ my answer. Now i got 'B' :D
