Hello,

I have the ASCE 7-10 but could not find an answer to my question.

Do you need to consider the ENTIRE building when coming up with the load calcs?

For instance, a hip roof home with flat roof over open patio in the back.

for roof calcs on the flat roof, the average height of the BUILDING is needed, correct? Not just the height of the flat roof? Also, do I need the dimensions of the ENTIRE building?

I've been always considering the entire building, but some people just use the flat portion

thanks

I use the entire building parameters for all components and cladding regardless of where the component is located.

But my deck attachment schedule I will have a different pressure/attachment listed for enclosed vs partially enclosed vs open.

I have seen a lot of people doing it wrong, but I am not aware of publications that allow their interpretation.
