Consulting with a systems and materials background?

3 posts in this topic

Is there anyone out there with a mechanical systems and materials background who does consulting work? It seems most mechanical PE consultants I come across do HVAC or fluids work. My experience is pretty narrow, basically product testing / fatigue of metals, with absolutely no CAD experience. Is it possible to make a living off of Miner's Rule and telling people to move their weld to the neutral axis?

I am a PE that took the mechanical system and materials test.

Most engineering consultants are hired since they have a PE to sign off on government related projects. (civil, HVAC, etc.)

I am finding it difficullt to go out on my own with the type of experience that I have, similar to your situation.

bump and a half.

I took mechanical systems and materials. I work in product design and engineering consulting and the PE is pretty much useless on a day-to-day basis. My boss asked everyone at the firm to pursue a PE and I am the only one that did. I got my license, I did not get a raise, and I am looking for a better job. I have actually found the license to be an annoyance because recruiters and hiring managers think that because I am a PE that I do HVAC.

There are consultancy firms out there that specialize in doing expert witness work where a PE in mechanical systems is required -- accident reconstruction, failure analysis, etc etc. Not too many will hire anyone with less than 10 years experience and many look for a minimum of MS in engineering
