I'm a licensed Fire Protection Engineer with a degree in Computer Engineering. I'm an Electrical MEP Engineer by experience designing power distribution systems for buildings and fire alarm systems which are my specialty.

I just recently took the Electrical Power PE and await results in that area. I felt it was necessary to take a review course and really get strong in power since I've been doing that a lot and nice to get the theoretical background back in shape!

I look forward to helping members on this site with advice on how to pass the fire protection PE which I found to be very challenging and I had to take it twice. I've never been a traditional big study-er, but I probably put in a bachelor's degree worth of studying to pass it! Spent a lot of money too, lol.

Also am NICET II (soon to be III) certified in Fire Alarm systems, so can help with that as well, as that has become pretty popular of late.

For now am focusing on the Electrical....hope I don't have to retake the exam but if I do, I'll be sure to jam this board up for advice!

I recently looked into NICET certification and had just about convinced myself that they attempt to exclude engineering training/experience in favor of hands on, field experience at the technician level. I'm an EE PE with a BSEE in an MEP role with a fair amount of fire alarm design experience. I'd like any insight into how to present my credentials and experience to qualify for a shot at NICET II certification at least. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Len

NICET is focused more towards the technician than the engineer. An engineering degree means little as far as NICET certification is concerned.

You're certainly welcome to take the test however NICET will want a verifier to back you up on your experience which is required to get the certification. Some states only require that one pass the written exam in order to receive a sprinkler or alarm license.

So what advice would you give on passing the Fire Protection Exam. I'm scheduled to take at the end of the month. My main reference is currently the SFPE Reference Manual and i'm not that pleased with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The sorriness of the SFPE study guide is why I went ME. That thing is riddled with errors.
